Valle d'Aosta (Aosta Valley) is a mountainous region, surrounded by France to the west, Switzerland to the north and Piedmont to the east and south. The region has approximately 120.000 inhabitants a figure expected to rise to 125.000 around 2015. Trade is primarely oriented towars the EEC exchanges where the balance for the Regione Valle d’Aosta is positive. The pro capita consumption (not food industry) within the Regione Valle d’Aosta (year 2000) is approximately of 16.000 euro, 60% more than the national average.
The role of tourism. In the Regione Autonoma Valle d’Aosta, services industry represents the main economic activity. Tourism is the dominant industry, especially Alpine skiing, for example, at Courmayeur in the Gran Paradiso National Park. Other activites such as hiking, mountain and rock climbing, rafting, kayaking also draw many tourists each year. There is no large-scale industry, except for forestry and the lumber industries and the generation of hydrolectric energy. The valley bottoms have some intensive, small scale farming while the higher slopes are used for pasturing cattle, sheep and goats.

A focus on General Aviation. The Corrado Gex airport, till today, has been used primarily for the local Aero Club traffic, extra light aircraft, private flights, some tourism and, in a smaller extent, regular business traffic.
